Basic Judo Waza (Techniques)

Do you play Tekken? Or any of those martial arts computer games? Have you ever wondered how these  cartoon characters do all those flips and turns and punches to defend themselves and defeat the enemy? Well, one of the sports that have inspired those deathly moves is Judo.

There are different techniques or skills needed when learning the sport of Judo. These techniques are divided into three different categories namely, throwing (nage waza,) grappling (katame waza) and vital-point striking (atemi waza.)

First of all, throwing techniques (nage waza). The throwing technique is further divided into two parts, standing (tachi waza) and sacrifice (sutemi waza). Furthermore, there are different varieties under each kind of throwing technique.

–> Tachi Waza (Standing technique)

– Te Waza (Hand)

> Ippon-seoi-nage (One-arm shoulder throw) – As seen in the illustration, the defender (one on the right), grabs the attacker’s arm (one on the left), and pretty much throws his body over using the force from the shoulder.

One Arm Shoulder Throw

– Koshi Waza (Hip)

> Harai goshi (Sweeping hip throw) – The defender grabs the attacker by arm, and swings him with his hips while sweeping the attacker’s feet off the ground.

Sweeping Hip Throw

– Ashi Waza (Foot/Leg)

> Osoto-gari (Large outer reap) – The defender uses his right leg to sweep the attacker’s right leg in a diagonal motion from behind.

Large Outer Reap

> Ouchi-gari (Large inner reap) – The defender pushes the attacker backward/sideward, then locks his leg behind the attacker’s leg. After, the defender sweeps his leg, bringing the attacker on the floor.

Large Inner Reap

> Uchi mata (Inner thigh wraparound throw)- The defender pulls the attacker toward him and positions his leg in between the thighs of the attacker. After, he sweeps his leg to open or split the attacker’s leg, causing him to get thrown off balance and down to the floor.

–> Sutemi Waza (Sacrifice Technique)

– Ma Sutemi Waza (Front Sacrifices)

> Tomoe nage (Circular throw) – The defender pulls back the attacker towrds him, to the point that they are almost lying on the floor. The defender positions his foot in the stomach area of the attacker. After, the defender throws the attacker over his head using his foot.
