Judo Tournaments

Judo, like most martial arts during tournaments, is a very exciting sport to watch and to witness. It originated in Japan and it mainly comprises of one throwing his opponent to the ground with great strategy and technique. Below are two Judo tournaments where the De La Salle Judo Varsity team participates, and where we can see first hand how Judo and all the technicals involved take place.

We have the University Athletic Association of the Philippines or UAAP Judo Tournament. The tournament was previously held during the second semester of the academic year, but due to TV airtime schedule conflicts with UAAP’s Volleyball Championship, the tournament had to move to the first semester. Judo is not included in the official count of total titles.

Both men’s and women’s team have seven weight divisions and each division has two representatives. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to those who accumulate the most number of points.

University of Sto.Tomas and the University of the Philippines each have a total of 16 championships, while the Ateneo de Manila University has eight. UST, UP and ADMU are the universities with the most number of championships.

For all Lasallian Judo players, we have the Inter-La Salle Judo Tournament. The Inter-La Salle tournament used to be an inter-college tournament, only for the different colleges of DLSU. But the management decided to include two other La Sallian institutions namely La Salle Greenhills and De La Salle Zobel.“The purposes [of this tournament] are to unite the varsity team and the young bloods, to harness each other’s skills, and to establish a sense of belongingness as one team,” DLSU Judokas Head Coach Sam Bernales explained. Participating teams, over all, are the DLSU Judoka and the players from different colleges, La Salle Greenhills, and De La Salle Zobel.
